By now, many members of the Dallas Cowboys have found their way to the beach, overseas or overseas beaches. Summer vacation plans are front and center for the team after last week’s minicamp concluded over a month of offseason exercises geared to getting the newcomers integrated with the tenured Cowboys and having them learn the 2017 systems.
Of course, the real preparation work begins in late July at training camp in Oxnard, California. The past several weeks have been about absorbing. Camp will be about execution. Still, the coaching staff got to learn its rookies and free agents beyond the scope of scouting reports. That gives insight as to what the pecking order will be at multiple positions.
Here, insight is gleaned from all of the reports through the offseason, particularly to minicamp to forecast what the 53-man roster will look like and the depth chart currently reveals.
Over the weekend, Cowboys Wire examined the offensive side of the ball. Checked that out here. Now, it’s time to handicap the defense.
We have 26 defensive players making the Cowboys’ 53-man roster for the moment, with two players, David Irving and Nolan Carroll, not counting immediately. They will likely be suspended for four and two games respectively. There are also five players from the defense on the 10-man practice squad.
Of course, any additions the club makes over training camp or after final cuts from other teams will have downstream impact.
